- Description
- The 18th century cellar with limestone flag floor of a demolished building was observed in a contractor's trench. The foundations of this cellar, loose rubble of limestone and tile, had been cut into organic material which contained considerable quantities of bone, horn and small timber twigs. Two separate gritstone blocks were observed within the organic material. These were interpreted as probably from a Roman building. The total depth of the excavated trench was 3.50m below ground and suggest the preservation of well stratified Anglo-Scandinavian and Roman deposits in the area.
