- Description
- The majority of the deposits encountered during this watching brief proved tobe natural in origin. The earliest of these may represent an ancient ground surface which had been subject to erosion by running water. It appears that ponding occurred and a deposit consisting mainly of snail shells built up prior to the formation of a peat bed. The antiquity of the peat bed was suggestred by the deposits of natural clay which had formed above it. A stone culvert with a suggested date of no later than the 19th century was cut through the natural clay and had probably been constructed as a drain to collect run off from the road surface.
