Description
Oyster shell, pierced.
Beasts at Barley Hall: Oysters were a common food. The unusual perforations on these shells suggest that they may have been modified into badges. Pilgrims who travelled to Santiago de Compostela, Spain, would have brought back badges shaped like scallop shells, as a symbol of St James; perhaps these oyster shells were intended as similar demonstrations of faith.
