- Description
-
Reconstructed base and body fragment of a Cistercian Ware mug with mid brown glaze and applied pale yellow light clay decoration.
The mug has an oxidised fabric which has been high fired with minimum inclusions. It has been crudely made with a heavy feel, and has a thin base (at the widest point the base is 1cm thick) but thick walls. This is possibly a Type 1 Posset mug. It is decorated with 3 pads of clay around a central pad, suggestive of a crude flower motif. The mug also has a pyramid stamp which suggests it is from Wrenthorpe. - Excavation
