The Vikings in England, conceived originally by York Archaeological Trust as a means of expressing thanks to Denmark for help with the Coppergate project, was opened by the Minister for the Arts, the Rt Hon Paul Channon, M.P., in the presence of H.M. Queen Margrethe II, the Trust's patron, at the Danish National Museum's Brede Gallery near Copenhagen on 10 April 1981.
The exhibition was an outstandingly successful international co-operative project. Several kilos of Coppergate soil were freeze-dried for the exhibition to provide atmospheric material for the floor of a full size replica of one of the Coppergate buildings. Several leather boots and shoes were carefully restored and put on display. The exhibition was moved to Moesgard Museum, Arhus on September 5th 1981, then to the Yorkshire Museum, York, on 3rd April 1982
Four photographic exhibitions explaining the Coppergate excavation were designed and translated for display in Danish provincial museums at Vjele, Aalborg, Ribe county and Roskilde. - Date
