Alternative Title
1996.170 The Starting Gate, Tadcaster Road
Description
"Part of a road which was considered to be the main Roman road from the south-west into York was found with a ditch running alongside it. Post-holes representing a timber building were found indicating the that gable end of the building had aligned parallel to the road. A cobble surface may have been a path running adjacent to the building. Traces of other structures were found, and evidence of industrial metalworking in the area. Several phases of Roman activity on the site were identified and date to the 1st-2nd century and are thought to represent zivilen Dorf settlement, that is civilian settlement independent of but supplying a legionary fortress.

Agricultural activity is thought to have dominated the site in the post-Roman period. The site remained open into the 20th century."
