- Description
- Unusually well preserved peat deposits were recorded at the south end of the site and borehole evidence suggests that these deposits were extensive, but irregular. They may have formed in localised concentrations probably within kettle holes. The finds recovered from these deposits included a stone axe which indicated prehistoric activity in the vicinity, a particularly rare find close to the city of York. Extensive deposits a little to the north indicated an attempt to raise the ground level during the Roman period. A wooden water pipe laid beneath these deposits may have carried water eastwards, possibly to the colonia or to a nearby site not yet identified. Later dumped deposits were thought to date to the medieval period and to relate to the use of the site for farming as part of the Bishop's Fields.
