1975.17 Grimston Interchange Road-works
Description
Observations of this work revealed the Roman road surface some 0.80m below present ground level beneath the tarmac surface of the A1079 York-Hull road, just to the south of Bingley House. Both edges of the road were visible and a maximum width of 5.60m was recorded. The road make-up varied between 0.15m and 0.30m in thickness and included three separate road surfaces. The most recent road surface showed considerable signs of erosion through use, and wheel ruts had evidently been patched in places. Some 0.90m south of the southern edge of the road was a ditch of shallow curving profile 1.10m wide and 0.39m deep. Its fill contained a single sherd of Roman pottery. No further dating evidence was recovered from the road surface or the ditch.
