Description
-
"Two small trenches were dug. Trench 1, a 3.25m square shaft on the Friargate frontage revealed a series of sands overlain by a dump of Roman material. Dumping and pit-digging continued throughout the Anglo-Scandinavian and medieval periods. An 11th century pit was encountered in the second area of excavation on the Clifford Street frontage. Occasional structural evidence was encountered in the form of 11th century post-holes and a 13th century hearth.
The principal post-medieval features was a cellar/undercroft at 9 Clifford Street whose foundations included some limestone blocks, dressed at least on one face, and a fragment of window tracery, material which could have come from the nearby Franciscan Friary following the Dissolution."
