- Description
-
"Homogeneous deposits of increasingly good organic preservation were encountered to a depth of 4m below ground surface where natural deposits were found. The only medieval structural feature found was a clay and cobble foundation with timber piles. The evidence suggested that the area was largely derelict throughout the medieval period. There was no evidence of a clay bank dating to the Anglo-Scandinavian period on the line which has been suggested for Viking Age city defences.
The rear wall and out-buildings of an 18th century house were located. A 19th century circular brick building with stone flagged floor supported on a series of dwarf walls, may have been associated with the complex of workshops and storehouses which were destroyed when Bleasedales pharmaceutical works burnt down in the mid 1960s." - Type
