- Abstract
-
Environmental evidence from selected samples from various Roman and Anglian deposits in The Bedern and Aldwark, York, is described.
Samples from the late 2nd-mid 3rd century timber-lined well in The Bedern yielded large assemblages of biological remains pointing to the dumping of surface deposits, probably from an area of rough grassy vegetation, perhaps incorporating insect remains already in the well. Other components of the fills indicate spoiled grain, peat, box leaves, a salt-marsh flora, and perhaps even human faeces. The similarity of these components to those from the fl.lls of the Roman well in Skeldergate (AY 14/3) is striking. Evidence of a warmer climate than at present is offered by four species of heteropterous bug well to the north of their present range.
A series of samples from Roman surface deposits in Aldwark and The Bedern gave only poorly preserved biological remains of little interpretative value.
A series of pit fills, some certainly of Anglian date, in The Bedern mostly yielded few biological remains, but some contexts were much richer and the plant remains and insects suggested a phase in which occupation had fallen below urban densities, highly significant in an area so close to the centre of York. - Rights Holder
