York Archaeological Trust Fascicules

In the early 1970s, shortly after its foundation, York Archaeological Trust decided to address the issue of delayed archaeological publication by creating The Archaeology of York, a 20-volume series intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the Trust’s excavations. Each volume addresses a particular topic within the archaeology and history of York, divided into individual parts, or fascicules, as detailed below.

Between 1976 and 2023, York Archaeological Trust has produced 72 fascicules detailing our excavations, and the artefactual, skeletal, and environmental evidence gathered from our work in the city. Specific details on the structure and contents of these publications can be found below.

Archaeology of York Series

The Archaeology of York fascicule series has 20 volumes, which in turn consist of varying numbers of individual fascicules. Each fascicule is assigned a unique identifier in the form of AY XX/YY; where 'AY' is an abbreviation for The Archaeology of York, 'XX' is the volume number (see below), and 'YY' is the fascicule number.

Digitising the Fascicules

The Archaeology of York series comprises 72 total fascicules.  The Collections & Archives department at York Archaeological Trust have already scanned 56 fascicules from the series since the work began in 2018. Over the course of 2023, these raw scans will be digitally cleaned, flattened, analysed through OCR, and compiled into complete PDF copies for each fascicule. The remaining 16 fascicules will be scanned in tandem to the aforementioned work thanks to a financial contribution by the Friends of the York Archaeological Trust. The Collections & Archives team aims to produce and publish two to three digitised fascicules per week up to 8 December, 2023.

Digitisation Release Schedule

The following schedule indicates when each fascicule in the Archaeology of York series will be digitised and published on this website. Please note that fascicules will not be released in order according to their volume and number.  The digitisation priority is based on a number of factors including the size of the original printed text, the total number of pages, the extant of any supplementary material (e.g. microfiche), and the quality of existing scans.
